Next Generation 911

From medical emergencies and natural disasters to utility issues and security threats; it’s important for educational institutions to stay prepared to create safe learning environments for our children. Complying with Next-Generation 911 guarantees improved protection as a leap in emergency response technology.

It’s vital for educational institutions to create safe learning environments for teachers and students alike. Next-Generation 911 is a leap in emergency response infrastructure. With dynamic location routing, direct routing to public safety access points, and on-site notifications, emergency response services can respond faster and more effectively for all 115,576 K-12 schools, 3.5 million teachers, and 55 million students in the US. Increase the robustness of your school emergency protocol and invest in Next-Generation 911.

Medical Emergencies

An estimated 10-25% of childhood injuries will occur during school. An additional 20% of students in public schools will have chronic or special healthcare needs such as asthma, allergies, or diabetes. When 68% of 911 calls in school are life-threatening it’s essential to have a responsive emergency response system that can respond efficiently to mitigating any scenario. With NG911, your school’s internal and external coordination can be empowered to address any health scenario.

If a student on campus has an allergic reaction, a teacher can call 911. With direct routing, the teacher is immediately connected to the closest public safety answering point. This significantly reduces the amount of time reaching an emergency services dispatcher and avoids fatal rerouting issues caused by the public switched telephone network. With dynamic location routing, dispatchers provide first responders an accurate location down to the room of the patient as well as the most convenient entryway. The on-site notification features alert campus security and the school-nurse of the on-campus emergency. The security can help provide assistance with the medical response team in getting to the room while the nurse can provide immediate, temporary triage. Otherwise, a teacher would have to stay on the phone with the emergency dispatcher. and have a student run to the office or a nearby classroom to get the same help.

are intentionally lit.

Fires

More than 4,500 fires occur annually on K-12 property grounds, with 2 of every 5 being intentionally lit. These intentional fires can cause the most injury and the most property damage. In addition, intentional fires occur more often in bathrooms and locker rooms where adult supervision is less available. Regardless of cause, having NG911 can help emergency response teams respond more effectively to campus fires.

When a fire alarm is activated, NG911 can provide more information than the location of the school. It can also provide more relevant context including specific buildings and rooms affected. In addition to geospatial information, it can track additional information including smoke, area density, nearby fire risks, and fire spread. Not only can this information help firefighters locate the fire, but provide essential information on access points and containment.

“Without doubt, we are hearing across the board that schools are experiencing significantly more
crises related to school violence and emotional behavioral crises”

– Sharon Hoover, co-director of the National Center for School Mental Health

School Violence

School violence can happen to both students and staff. After the pandemic, increased student aggression has been observed and experienced. Nearly 7% of high school students have been threatened or injured with a weapon on school property. Double that, 14% of K-12 teachers experienced physical assault by students. Some staff positions like instructional aides and student resource officers experience higher rates of violence at up to 22%.

With NG911, schools can improve their response to on-campus aggression. With geo-fencing from M-911 and on-site notification features, administrative staff can be alerted to attacks anywhere on campus regardless of classroom, field, bathroom, or school yard. Extra staff can be called to help break up fights and provide immediate support. The dynamic location routing can also be leveraged by medical and law enforcement teams to quickly reach the situation and provide appropriate interventions. Creating safer environments in schools can improve student attendance rates, improve & improve teacher retention.

Shootings

Tragically, since 2013 there have been at least 1100 incidents of gunfire on school grounds causing almost 400 deaths and more than 800 injuries. Next-Generation 911 can improve emergency responses to these catastrophes and support rapid intervention from law enforcement and aid from medical services.

From first contact to the arrival of first responders, NG911 provides more effective and efficient emergency response. NG911 supports IP communication, allowing students and staff to contact 911 services more subtly through SMS messages. This enables multimedia support, where media (photo, video, and video calling) are leveraged to provide more descriptive information about the perpetrator. The dynamic location routing abilities can empower dispatchers to more accurately determine the location of the perpetrator and where medical services may be needed.

On-site notifications are guaranteed from either a desk phone or cell phone. Empowered with geofencing technology, campus officials are always able to learn of an emergency at the time of 911 contact and its precise location. This can enhance emergency communication for administration during passing periods, on the sports fields, and outdoor facilities.
